By 2026, global 5G IoT (internet of things) connections are expected to reach 116 million, a 1,100 percent growth from 17 million in 2023, according to Juniper Research. The smart city services and healthcare sectors are anticipated to account for more than 60 percent of these connections, driven by the ultra-low latency and high bandwidth of 5G IoT technology. In order to capitalize on the cost-effectiveness of 5G networks and their ability to carry large amounts of data, cities must leverage 5G connectivity as high-bandwidth gateways. Key services that 5G networks will enable include monitoring transportation networks, telemedicine, connected ambulances, and real-time remote monitoring. According to the research co-author, healthcare providers should prioritize areas that will provide the highest return on investment, such as connected emergency services.
Juniper Research notes that cities must act quickly to take advantage of the capabilities of 5G networks and ensure that they are equipped to provide the highest quality of services. As the Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to modernize services, 5G networks will enable faster and more efficient healthcare provision than ever before. In order to improve the efficiency of healthcare systems, 5G technology should be implemented in areas with the greatest potential return on investment. 5G technology will also provide an opportunity for cities to improve infrastructure and transportation networks, as well as other services, to ensure that citizens have access to the most up-to-date technology available.
